Changing to a new shampoo isn’t so bad

1254972386_bcb7f805a6I’ve been holding off on buying a new bottle of shampoo as long as possible. I have a favorite type of shampoo that just really works well with my hair — I’ve been using it since high school. But, while it isn’t a salon quality hair care product, it still isn’t the cheapest on the shelf. I just don’t like buying it when it isn’t on sale or I don’t have a coupon.

Before this week’s shopping trip, though, I realized I couldn’t make it even one more week on the amount of shampoo I had left. I went to the grocery store, thinking that I’d have to pay full price for my precious shampoo.

Frozen Peas: A very good cause

283749768_b190d7563eI’m a member of Twitter — a sort of microblogging site, for those of you who haven’t run across it. I didn’t get a chance to visit the site much this week, but when I logged in today, I was amazed to find something very special going on.

Handwritten Holiday Cards Are A Dying Art

1826817505_6c1983ada5Half of the holiday cards I’ve gotten this year are obviously part of a Hallmark pack that someone signed, addressed and mailed. A quarter of the rest are printed in some fashion — some bear no sign of ever having been touched by human hands before I opened the envelope.

Overbooking your holiday schedule

173060038_2ec48b36d4I talked to my youngest sister the other night — much younger, actually; she won’t turn thirteen for another six months. Despite not even being in high school yet, her schedule is absolutely packed. In addition to school, she runs track, plays piano and walks neighborhood dogs. She’d called me because she had only a few days left to finish a research paper for her science fair project and she was having trouble finding resources.

“But isn’t it almost Winter Break?”

“Yeah, but that just means all the teachers are trying to get through a bunch of stuff before the holidays!”

Staying warm during a freeze

2101782725_7ff283a794Trying to get in touch with family and friends in Oklahoma this last week got me thinking about making sure that, if nasty weather hits my house, I’m prepared.

The biggest issue seems to be keeping warm. Much of Oklahoma was without power for days — and in a lot of cases, power equals heat. Now, I’ve got a fireplace to fall back on, but I don’t have any wood for it. If a blizzard happened overnight, that fireplace wouldn’t do me much good, unless I’m prepared to start tossing my furniture into it. Lots of houses and apartments don’t even have fireplaces, either.
