Lived in Pennsylvania until I was 29, ran away to live in the woods in England for five and a half years, returned to Philly area. Used to have a late lamented webpage about Peter Gabriel, guinea pigs and model horses called "In rraven's Eyes". Here's a quick tip-remember to not leave your computer with your ex when you leave for another country. Would like to be a white horse when I grow up. But I am having fun being a freelance writer. Writing is my passion.

Of Goldfish And George Carlin

One of my heroes died in late June, the ground-breaking American comedian George Carlin. I’m still not quite over it and probably won’t be, especially now that one of my goldfish died. I have no idea why Ghost Fish died, but the other four are doing well. Ghost Fish was only about a year old, while George Carlin was 71 and quite clearly died of a heart problem. Still, their deaths were an equal shock.

Since Ghost Fish died soon after George, I tell people that I’m still upset over George’s death rather than tell them about my fish. I have a feeling George wouldn’t mind.

Grammar Snobs

Most people don’t believe me when I say that I have two college degrees. I don’t entirely blame them. My spelling isn’t the best and I often use slang in my speech and writing. In being a professional writer, my job is to communicate information. Many times, slang can get an idea across much better than proper grammar. My job is not to teach grammar. And yet, professional writers receive blistering emails about their grammar nearly every day — and not from our clients. They are from “Grammar Snobs”.

This got me to thinking about forms of speech and social classes. One of the ways we feel superior to others is through the use of language rules. A lot of these rigid rules are fading away. I see this as a positive sign in the development of our species.

Laughter Yoga

From doing tons of research for articles, I know that yoga gives you many health benefits, including a great way to manage your stress. However, I’m not the most physically supple person in the world. I see it’s time to do the Down Dog position and I’m off to do the Butt On Couch position. But I can definitely get behind laughter yoga.

Having A Miserable Day

I’m having a miserable day. This is actually a good thing for me in the long run. I’m not used to having a lot of really happy days, which I have had recently. After a while of good luck, I start wondering when the crash is going to come. So sometimes I wake up and decide I’m going to have a miserable day to just get the let down over with and then go back to being reasonably happy.

This approach will not work for everyone, but if it works for me, it may work for someone else.

Book Review: “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff at Work”

Refreshingly light on the schmaltz

I usually cringe when I’m given a self-help book with a cute title like Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff at Work (Hyperion, 1998). It makes me wonder if the book is one of those impractical collections of sweet catch phrases and instant spirituality that’s published in mountains of books these days. It makes you wonder what alternate universe the author is talking about. Being polite and level-headed certainly doesn’t happen in many work place environments all of the time. However, I am delighted to report that Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff at Work by Richard Carlson, Ph.D. is actually a helpful text for real people who live in the real world.
