Don’t Blame Yourself For Failed Romances

broken_heartIn case you’re wondering, I still blame myself for failed romances (which I managed to mess up in two continents.)  And then, after a good pout, it doesn’t bother me so much and I go play with the dog.  I am very well qualified for talking about how it feels to survive bad love affairs.  So, later on, if you relapse and feel that you are doomed in your love affairs, don’t blame yourself for blaming yourself.  This will make sense in time, trust me.

Some Good News, For A Change

1671637651_c3194d1cbeI often really despise being a human being, because I’m so ashamed of the actions of a lot of my fellow man and woman.  Some days, I feel like saying to every animal or plant I meet, "I’d to apologize on behalf of my species."  This gets to be very stressful.  I’ve read a lot about handling shame about your gender, your career or your ethnic heritage, but not a lot about handling the shame of being human.

They best way to counter this shame (I think) is to learn about good news about productive and caring human beings.  Read on, and get your hankies ready.

“Man’s Search For Meaning” By Viktor Frankl

sun-grass-heartsThere certainly are a lot of self-help books out there, written by a lot of so-called experts on stress management and life coaching.  Which one of the recent avalanche is worth your money?

None of ‘em.  The only self-help book worth your money isn’t even a self-help book.  It’s usually sold under psychology.  It’s "Man’s Search for Meaning" written by Viktor Frankl, a Nazi concentration camp survivor.  Now, honestly — who do you think knows more about getting through stressful times — someone who lived through Auschwitz, or someone who chats with Oprah?

Other self-help books are nice and they can give you ideas or a good laugh, but you can get them for free in a library.  This is the only one I recommend actually buying.

The Guilt of Being Human

earth"pity this busy monster, manunkind…"  — ee cummings

At this time of the year, it is traditional to exchange gifts with family, friends and business associates.  And often we, as a species, think we are God’s gift.  I don’t think our planet thinks we are God’s gift at all — and if so, where is the receipt?  I often look at the actions of other humans and feel like making elaborate apologies to other species.  Most days, I feel a heavy guilt of being human.  But if I feel this guilt, perhaps others do, too.  If we all did, maybe our species can act on this guilt and finally become God’s gift, after all.
