Holidays, family, social and work events, life’s milestones and similar occasions can all create moments of stress and moments of joy and relaxation. Here we examine how they can effect us and how we prepare for and react to them.

Keeping New Year’s Resolutions

women-happy-outdoorI stopped making New Year’s Resolutions a couple of years ago. I try to improve myself all year so there’s no need for resolutions really. At least that’s what I tell people.

The start of a new year brings hope and the sense of renewal. I still get sucked into that sometimes and make a few resolutions that I dare not utter out loud.

Christmas Newsletters Don’t Have To Be Hard To Write

2007_1225family0004I’ve gotten a couple of Christmas newsletters from friends this year. One of the friends is someone I haven’t heard from in nearly a year. The Christmas newsletter is a great idea. Even though I’ve never written one before this year, I’ve always loved receiving them. It’s a great way to catch people up on what’s happening in your life and family.

“Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays”

313881077_78ded785fbI temped in an architect’s office last week. It wasn’t a bad gig, but one conversation just sticks with me. I was helping out with their Christmas cards and was informed that this office simply doesn’t use the phrase “Happy Holidays.” The owner isn’t especially religious, but he does insist that everyone in the office has a “Merry Christmas.”

I debated getting my nose out of joint — after all, I don’t observe Christmas, and I’m pretty sure that one of the women that worked in the office is Muslim. But I’ve come to the conclusion that this architect is right.

Handwritten Holiday Cards Are A Dying Art

1826817505_6c1983ada5Half of the holiday cards I’ve gotten this year are obviously part of a Hallmark pack that someone signed, addressed and mailed. A quarter of the rest are printed in some fashion — some bear no sign of ever having been touched by human hands before I opened the envelope.

No Such Thing As The Perfect Christmas

sad_christmas_in_paIf you can get through the day without receiving a death threat, you’ve had a good Christmas.

Can you tell that Christmas is not my favorite time of year?  Just hearing the word "Christmas" stresses me out.  If it wasn’t for my family, who insist on celebrating Christmas, I wouldn’t bother with any of it and have more money to give to animal charities.  I have given up on the idea that somehow everyone who celebrates Christmas has the moral obligation to celebrate it perfectly.  The gifts have to be perfect, the lighting has to be perfect, the music has to be perfect, your manners have to be perfect — who are we kidding?  There is no such thing as the perfect Christmas, and never will be.  Relax — this is good news for all of you knocking yourself out trying to make a perfect Christmas.  You don’t HAVE to.  If you want to, go for it.  But you don’t HAVE to.
