What Stress Won’t Do To You

There are a lot of urban myths and old wives’ tales about how stress directly affects the body. I’m guilty of thinking that stress will turn my hair white and even writing about it. But stress alone can’t turn your hair white or grey. Stress can aggravate some medical conditions, but it usually is not the main culprit for some maladies that we blame it for. So, if you think your stress will give you an ulcer or cancer or turn your hair white, you can relax.

Full Body Scan Will Only Find You Stressed

The technology exists to get a full body CT (Computed Tomography) scan. You can use this to check for anything abnormal in your innards, such as strange growths or the beginning of tumors. Doctors stress time and time again that they best way to beat an illness like cancer is with early detection. Shouldn’t we have annual CT scans for caner, then?

However, it does cost a couple of thousand dollars. But even if price wasn’t the issue, a full body CT scan might still not be worth the stress it will cause you. This is the conclusion of Dr. Nancy Snyderman in her book Medical Myths That Can Kill You.

Comfort Foods

My Mom had to go to the hospital yesterday, even though she kept insisting that she didn’t want to go. I called the ambulance anyway. The doctors still aren’t sure what happened to her, but initial reports say she had a TIA (often called “mini stroke”). I don’t know how long she’ll be in the hospital. Both the pets and I seem to have lost our appetites (well, the goldfish are the notable exceptions. Perhaps they’re the kind that eats when upset). I don’t want to eat, but obviously have to. So, in cases like this, comfort foods are the way to go.

The Heart Attack that Wasn’t

On the first Saturday of May in 1999, I thought I was having a heart attack. Convinced I was going to die, I wondered what I really wanted to do if I lived. (It was to visit England again). Soon after I made the decision, the pain went away. Since I didn’t have health insurance at the time, so I thought I couldn’t afford to go to a doctor. I came to the wrong conclusion that I’d been given a second chance at life. I went to England a couple of months later. My life changed drastically from then on.

But did I actually have a heart attack that afternoon in May? Turns out, I didn’t. I was in absolutely no danger of dying whatsoever.

Could I Be Mentally Ill?

One of the weirdest times of your life is when you do things that you can’t explain. You are gripped with powerful emotions for no reason at all. You spend days in bed and still feel exhausted. Or, you can’t sleep at all because you feel too jazzed. You see yourself doing dangerous behaviors like suddenly stealing, picking up strangers at a bar or walking in the middle of railway tracks and yet you can’t stop your body from doing it.

And suddenly it hits you — you may be mentally ill. Now what do you do?
