The Joy of Stupid Criminals

dim bulb"Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis." — Jack Handey

Although laughter can’t cure everything, it sure can cure a bad mood by getting you to laugh and, therefore, relax.  For example, I love reading about stupid criminals.  They really are funnier than a television sit com.  (When I say "stupid", I don’t mean "mentally retarded").  If you wrote a short story about the antics stupid criminals get up to, you’d never be able to get it published because the story would be "too unbelievable".  I also can’t help but feel a little better about myself.  I’ve done some bone-headed things in my day, but at least I never did what some of these guys did (knock on wood).

Time To Let Go Of The Old Manuscript

buried aliveWhen I was in England, I wrote an 800 or so page manuscript by hand, illustrating it as well.  It was on Paganism, basically, although it also had autobiographical bits in it (as well as my sketches).  I only had one copy of this monster because I was homeless at the time (and I discovered you couldn’t plug a copier into a tree).

You can probably see where this is going.  Congratulations for nourishing your instinct.  However, let me get on with it.

On August 6, 2005 my shelter in the woods was burnt down.  I wasn’t hurt and neither was my dog.  But guess what was mostly destroyed?  You got it — the manuscript.

Otium Sanctum, or Holy Leisure

effort"…and on the seventh day God rested."     — Genesis 2:2

When you think of religious people, you don’t tend to think of then resting.  They always seem to be busy sticking their noses into other people’s business.  But, no matter what your religious or spiritual views, it is interesting that many major religions stress the need to spend time unstressing.  In Christianity, this is known as "otium sanctum", or "holy leisure".

This usually doesn’t just mean being completely comatose, or partying too hardy, but in taking time to be quiet enough to notice the beauty in everyday things.

When You Have A Song Stuck In Your Head

frustratedI have this theory that hell is being stuck with only three CDs of incredibly bad music.  There’s probably more to hell, but the music is what really rubs the salt into your wounds.  Whenever I come across a song that really turns my stomach, I think, "That’s on the 3 CD Soundtrack to Hell).  But it can be incredibly stressful when you have one of these musical mutations stuck in your head for days on end.  I remember when I had "Achey Breaky Heart" stuck in my head for about a week. I’d rather get a root canal than have that happen to me again.

The song I currently have stuck in my head is the Pet Shop Boys’ "It’s A Sin."  I figure it’ll go away when the Pet Shop Boys CD I bought will finally arrive in the mail.  This isn’t as stressful as I happen to really like the song.  But what do you do when you have a song stuck in your head that you abhor?

Things Life Is Too Short For

less stress magicOne of the reasons we get stressed is that we fear death.  One of the reasons we fear death is that we would likely miss out on doing the things we never got to do before we died.  So, we spend what’s left of this life cramming in as much "quality time" as we possibly can, in a race against death.  Life is too short for that.  To help you prioritze your "life list", "bucket list", or just your average day, here are things you can not bother stressing out about, because life is too short.
