Bring Your Fears Down to Size

scaredMagic is a fascinating thing, whether you believe in it or not.  When you are faced with a huge, stressful situation, it helps to be able to do SOMETHING creative, rather than just sit around feeling helpless.  It takes a bit of coordination and focus to any kind of activity like a magic ritual or making a cup of tea.  This can greatly help you to relax just after stressful situations.  Although it would be great if someone came along to rescue us whenever we get into trouble, that rarely happens (if ever).  You don’t need to believe in supernatural or divine forces in order to get the benefit of a magic ritual.

The following is a little ritual that I made up.  It helps bring my fears down to size.  I hope it helps you, too.  And if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, then don’t.  It’s okay.

The Relief Of Knowing The Worst Case Scenario

culture shockKnowing the worst makes it not so scary

Don’t get me wrong — there are things that still scare the bejeebers out of me.  But this list has really shrunk over the years.  For example, one of my biggest fears is of getting arthritis.  (I am more afraid of arthritis than I am of Aids).  What would happen to my writing if I couldn’t use my hands?  I’d have to type with my nose, pecking like a chicken at the keyboard.  Gives you chills thinking about it, doesn’t it?

But now, after writing countless articles on arthritis, I’m no longer so scared of getting the dreaded prognosis someday.  I’ve now learned how other people cope, about the conventional and alternative medicines for arthritis, about support groups for arthritis sufferers and about products being made just for arthritics.  Knowing the worst case sceanario can be very relaxing.

Is Horror Relaxing?

scanner nightmare"People like to be scared when they feel safe."   — Alfred Hitchcock

Two of the most popular authors alive today are Stephen King and JK Rowling.  Stephen King is world-renowned for such chilling horror masterpieces as The Shining and Carrie.  Although the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling is not usually classified as horror, it does have its scary moments.  One of the reason people enjoy their work so much is that they genuinely like to read these scary stories.  Some even claim that they find a good horror novel or horror movie to be relaxing.  How can horror be relaxing?

Letting Go Of the Past

river"Letting go, it’s so hard…"   — Peter Gabriel, "Washing of the Water"

Oh, I feel your pain, Peter.  The past has quite a hold of our heads in the present, which often raises our stress levels even when nothing dangerous is happening to us.  Because of our survival instincts, we tend to go over and over bad memories instead of good ones, perhaps to try and recognize how to avoid getting into a similar mess in the future.  However, if you’re like me, once the Great Mistakes Of My Past movie begins to play in my head, it’s hard to switch it off.   Learning to let go of your past takes a long time to get a hang of, but worth the effort.

Stess Relief You Can Do Right Now

cat stretchAhh, and you thought you could come to this blog in order to slack off, eh?  Well, you still can, but you can also do these exercises to help you relax at your desk, couch, airport or wherever you are while you read this.  If you are in a situation where it isn’t safe to stretch (like a crowded subway), then mentally pretend you are doing them.  That will give you an exercise in creative visualization.  Then, you can do them in real life later.  Don’t be scared.  They’re really easy.

There’s no right or wrong way to do these instant stress relief exercises.  You won’t be tested on them.  That’s one of things that make them so effective!
