Thirteen Ways To Reduce Stress

Thirteen happens to be my lucky number, so today (the 14th), I’m listing thirteen quick and relatively easy activities you can do in order to help reduce your stress, calm down and relax. I think I’ve done about twelve of them today because my Mom is still in the hospital. These items are presented in no particular order. Hope this helps.

Playing With Pictures For Relaxation

“Are you playing with pictures again, Rena?” said Mom, leaning over my shoulder. My home office is her bedroom, so I can’t tell her to bug off.

“Erm, no. I’m learning a new software program called Paint.” I showed her one of the composite images I’d created (such as the one here) when I really should’ve been working.

“So, basically, you’re playing with pictures.”

“Yes, and I feel more relaxed than I have in days.”

Taking a Mental Hot Bath

When I was homeless in England, the one thing I missed the most was being able to take a hot bath. Oddly enough, I didn’t miss my boom box, my television or even central heating so much as taking a hot bath whenever I fancied. A hot bath is not only a great way to ease aches and pains, but also to relieve stress. It just seems to roll off of you into the water. Oh yeah — a bath is a good way to get clean, too.

So, I learned how to take a hot bath in my mind.

Laughter Yoga

From doing tons of research for articles, I know that yoga gives you many health benefits, including a great way to manage your stress. However, I’m not the most physically supple person in the world. I see it’s time to do the Down Dog position and I’m off to do the Butt On Couch position. But I can definitely get behind laughter yoga.

Bring Your Fears Down to Size

scaredMagic is a fascinating thing, whether you believe in it or not.  When you are faced with a huge, stressful situation, it helps to be able to do SOMETHING creative, rather than just sit around feeling helpless.  It takes a bit of coordination and focus to any kind of activity like a magic ritual or making a cup of tea.  This can greatly help you to relax just after stressful situations.  Although it would be great if someone came along to rescue us whenever we get into trouble, that rarely happens (if ever).  You don’t need to believe in supernatural or divine forces in order to get the benefit of a magic ritual.

The following is a little ritual that I made up.  It helps bring my fears down to size.  I hope it helps you, too.  And if you don’t feel comfortable doing it, then don’t.  It’s okay.
