Dealing with the Presidential Election

vote_here_womanI don’t know about you, but I SO wish the Presidential election was over and done with.  I’ve gotten to the point where I hate all of the candidates just because I can’t get away from their faces.  I couldn’t entirely duck the 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections when I lived in England, either, because whatever politics happens in America greatly affects Great Britain.  I was living out in the woods and other homeless people would come up to my camp and quiz me on American politicians and how to pronounce Ronald Regan’s name ("Ray-gun.  Just remember — ray-gun.")  There are days when I still wish I was sitting in the woods.  Here are some of the things I’m doing that helps me deal with the Presidential Election.

More Lessons From My Goldfish

fishOne of the ways I relax is to watch my goldfish at night.  I can’t watch them during the day, like when I eat lunch, because they frantically beg at me.  That can get a little annoying — especially when I look away from them only to see that my dog is also begging at me, large liquid puppy eyes fastened onto my sandwich.  But at night, my goldfish are quite the gurus of tranquility.  Here are some lessons that I recently learned.

Dealing With a TMI Moment

819849_gossipI learned today that TMI is text-speak for Too Much Information.  When I was a kid, TMI was short for Three Mile Island, but times change.  Perhaps that little slip qualifies for a TMI moment, in the current meaning of the term.  You will know when you are going through a TMI moment.  This is when you see, hear or read something that makes you involuntarily wince and your stomach clench.

In a recent column in The Philadelphia Inquirer, author Lisa Scottoline described her TMI moment when she suddenly discovered that the cute country music advert she was enjoying was actually a Viagra ad.  She dealt with it in the way she knew best — she wrote about it in a really clever way.

Why Am I Shocked When Good Things Happen?

little_scepticIf being a skeptic honestly makes you happy, go for it!

I had a couple of pieces of good news in the last couple of weeks.  I’m not making more than twice as much as I did this time last year.  And I also had an essay in the recently published A Cup of Comfort for Horse Lovers.  That’s a definite plus for the freelance writing career, since the "Cup of Comfort" series has international distribution and a better reputation with critics than, say, the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series.

Now, I have been writing since I could hold a pen.  Even on my taxes, where the IRS asks what occupation I am, I put down, "Freelance Writer".  So why am I so shocked that the career seems to be finally going well?  Perhaps because I’m a skeptic at heart.

Do Goldfish Meditate?

fishYou can learn lots of lessons from any animal.  You can learn how to do mantras from observing your cat, for example.  And even a goldfish has advice just as golden.

Although I don’t have proof, I firmly believe that goldfish meditate.  At least, mine do.  They are continually in wonder about every single moment of their lives.  Moving a rock a quarter of an inch provokes a flurry of inspection.  They are just as fascinated about their tank as they were one minute ago.  They assume nothing.  Every moment is filled with infinite possibility.  This is the essence of meditation (as far as I’m concerned).  Although many times those learning meditation are urged to be like water, you could also be like a goldfish.
