Love them and sometimes hate them, pets and animal can induce a state of relaxation and inspire angst second only to children.

More Lessons From My Goldfish

fishOne of the ways I relax is to watch my goldfish at night.  I can’t watch them during the day, like when I eat lunch, because they frantically beg at me.  That can get a little annoying — especially when I look away from them only to see that my dog is also begging at me, large liquid puppy eyes fastened onto my sandwich.  But at night, my goldfish are quite the gurus of tranquility.  Here are some lessons that I recently learned.

Do Goldfish Meditate?

fishYou can learn lots of lessons from any animal.  You can learn how to do mantras from observing your cat, for example.  And even a goldfish has advice just as golden.

Although I don’t have proof, I firmly believe that goldfish meditate.  At least, mine do.  They are continually in wonder about every single moment of their lives.  Moving a rock a quarter of an inch provokes a flurry of inspection.  They are just as fascinated about their tank as they were one minute ago.  They assume nothing.  Every moment is filled with infinite possibility.  This is the essence of meditation (as far as I’m concerned).  Although many times those learning meditation are urged to be like water, you could also be like a goldfish.

How To Get Lizards To Relax

godzillaHey, you never know when you’ll run into a stressed-out lizard.  Despite what you might have seen in the movies, lizards are not out to conquer the world.  Lizards basically want what anyone else wants — have a good time and avoid stressful situations.  Since mankind is moving more and more into natural habitats once inhabited only by lizards and bugs and birds, it’s good to know how to get a stressed out lizard to relax.  This also can help get on their good side when they do eventually decide to take over the planet.

The Rite of Spring

foxI love my dog. I keep telling myself this through gritted teeth.

When I lived in England, I lived outdoors in a makeshift campsite.  Seeing the first sign of spring’s arrival was always an amazing moment.  This was when the bluebells and the daffodils would begin to grow.  It always amazed me to see the tiny green shoots poke defiantly through the stubborn dirt.

And then I had to get a dog to share this magical moment with.

Now that Pony my dog entered my life, the telltale sign of spring’s arrival is when she rolls in fox poop.  Strangely enough, I don’t look forward to spring as I once did.

If you are having a bad day, then read on.  Be thankful that you’re not me.

Letting Your Dog Sleep In Your Bed

scan0002 I stopped watching Caesar Milan, the so-called “Dog Whisperer”. I do not deny he has done a tremendous amount of good for dogs given up for dead, but I can’t help but cringe at the thought of him watching my dog Pony and I together. I know he would not like it.

For example, I let Pony sleep in my bed. We’ve done that since she was seven weeks old. All of the serious dog training books frown on this because it’s not the behavior of a proper pack leader, but they’ve never met Pony. She chases my nightmares away.

If you are thinking of letting your dog sleep in your bed to get a better night’s sleep (especially if you are like me and are plagued by nightmares) then here are a few things to consider
