When Someone Says, “I Didn’t Sleep A Wink”

sleeping_beautyYou want to avoid a lot of stress in your life?  When someone says, "I didn’t sleep a wink all night," don’t argue.

My health has down turned and I had a bad night.  I might have slept a wink, I don’t know.  It sure doesn’t feel like it.  Thankfully, I now live with my Mom, who nods in complete sympathy and offers me a cup of tea whenever I have a night when I didn’t sleep a wink.

This is in complete contrast to any of my ex-boyfriends and some of my doctors, who would argue with me whenever I said, "I didn’t sleep a wink."  Today, I even came across a self-help book that argued that there is no such thing as people not sleeping a wink all night, so don’t complain to your doctor or your ex-boyfriend about not sleeping a wink because you’re lying.

Quick tip, gentle readers — if someone ever says to you, "I didn’t sleep at all last night", believe them.  It’ll make your life and the life of the incredibly cranky person in front of you a lot easier.

Sleep Tips For Night Workers

gorilla_sleepingI had to work the graveyard shift (9pm - 7am) for many years. Although some people are able to quickly change their inner clock without much trouble, most people’s bodies are severely confused by having to work when most people sleep, and sleep when most people work.  I am one of the latter.  The night shift job was the best I could find at the time and so I had to stick with it in order to survive.  Here are some tips on how to actually get some decent sleep when it seems like the rest of the world is wide awake.

Getting Too Little Sleep Speeds the Aging Process

couple-wakingWhen you feel like there are not enough hours in the day it’s easy to try to skimp on sleep. That’s the best way to get more into your packed schedule, right? That might seem like a good solution but in the long run you’re doing more harm than good.

Not getting enough sleep throws your hormones out of whack and speeds the aging process. People who get too little sleep have increased memory loss and gain weight more easily. If you don’t get enough sleep you’re more likely to go into autopilot while doing things like driving. This can be very dangerous. Lack of sleep causes impaired judgment and decreased motor coordination.

When I don’t get enough sleep I have a headache all day and can’t focus. This is an awful feeling. So I always try to get the sleep my body requires. Most people need roughly eight hours of sleep. Some people need more and some need a little less. Experiment to see what amount of sleep is right for you.

Benefits to Nightmares

"I am standing up at the water’s edge in my dream

I cannot make a single sound as you scream…" — Peter Gabriel

scanner nightmareUsually, we hate nightmares, but would we be better off without them?  This was the question I asked myself as I did research on the hormone melatonin, which is available in most health food stores and websites.  It is usually recommended for jet lag.  However, it is noted for producing incredibly vivid nightmares.

Could this be the reason why I have had vivid nightmares all of my life?  Too much melatonin being put out by my pineal gland?  Probably, there are more reasons than just an overproduction of melatonin.  For the sake of argument, let’s assume nightmares are caused by the pineal gland’s overproduction of melatonin.  How about if I could take a pill to suppress the melatonin production that I could afford?  Would I take it?  No, because as much as they annoy us, there are benefits to nightmares.

Coping With Nightmares

Other posts on this site sucessfully describe to you how to cope with "day-mares", things in waking life that stress you to the max.  But what can also stress you are nightmares.  Nightmares are definately nags ; they can interrupt your sleep, rattle your nerves and set your heart pounding.  Loosing sleep and having your body tense and ready for either fight or flight is not conducive to relaxation, let alone getting back to sleep.

Getting seven or eight hours of sleep a night is crucial to your overall health and natural abilities to cope with stress.   The latest studies from the University of Warwick in London have shown that not getting enough sleep could increase your chances of an early death.  And, almost peversely, getting too much sleep can also be dangerous to your health.
