Learning From Silence

I’ve been doing some research on Native American tribal customs and came across an interesting passage. When being taught by the elders in the family, kids were encouraged not to say anything. The theory was that you can’t hear the voice of wisdom when you’re chattering over it. I would have been a real problem child had I been born into a pre-Columbian Native American tribe.

But there is a lot to be learned when you open your ears to silence — even if you’re like me and are going deaf.

Dealing With Stressed Out People

Wow. It’s one of those blessed moments in your life when God’s in His heaven and all’s right with the world. You breathe a deep sigh of satisfaction.

And then someone you know stomps into the room, obviously upset about something. Usually, the presence of a stressed out person makes everyone else in the vicinity tense up. You know if the other person can relax, so can you. What can you do to help this person to relax?

Coping with Common Depression

Realistic Thinking

One of the ways to manage your depression is to challenge your negative thinking with positive statements and realistic thinking. When encountering thoughts that make your fearful or depressed, challenge those thoughts by asking yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense. For example, your afraid that if you do not get that job promotion then you will be stuck at your job forever. This depresses you, however your thinking in this situation is unrealistic.

The fact of the matter is that there all are kinds of jobs available and just because you don’t get this job promotion doesn’t mean that you will never get one. In addition, people change jobs all the time, and you always have that option of going elsewhere if you are unhappy at your present location.

Perspective

Some people get depressed and have a difficult time getting out of bed in the mornings.  When this happens, a person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do to get their mind off of the problem.   A person could take a walk, listen to some music, read the newspaper or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things. Doing something will get your mind off of the problem and give you confidence to do other things.

Visualization

Sometimes, we can get depressed over a task that we will have to perform in the near future. When this happens, visualize yourself doing the task in your mind. For instance, you and your team have to play in the championship volleyball game in front of a large group of people in the next few days. Before the big day comes, imagine yourself playing the game in your mind. Imagine that your playing in front of a large audience. By playing the game in your mind, you will be better prepared to perform for real when the time comes. Self-Visualization is a great way to reduce the fear and stress of a coming situation.

Another technique that is very helpful is to have a small notebook of positive statements that makes you feel good. Whenever you come across an affirmation that makes you feel good, write it down in a small notebook that you can carry around with you in your pocket.  Whenever you feel depressed, open up your small notebook and read those statements.

Is Blogging Stressful?

keyboard-kids-coloredOne of the most widely circulated real-news stories this year is The New York Times’ In Wide Word of 24/7 Stress, Writers Blog Til They Drop.   Chances are, you already read it, had it emailed to you or heard about it.  Considering that I’m a freelance writer, it was a story hard to ignore.  The story alleges that bloggers can kill themselves blogging in the hunt to report the Next Big Thing and thus give their sites a larger chunk of revenue share.

However, I hate to disappoint you, but blogging is not stressful in and of itself. In fact, I find it to be a real relief from my daily stress.  I have two personal blogs that don’t generate money and three professional blogs that do.  There does seem to be a difference between the blogger interviewed for the New York Times article than for "normal" bloggers.  The former — and most stressed out kind — are journalists where the deadline was always yesterday.  Don’t let their job pressures dissuade you from writing a diary, journal or blog.  Getting your thoughts out of your head and onto paper is one of the most economic and effective ways of managing stress.
