School Kid

What a Difference a New School Makes…….

My eldest son started school life in a large urban school with 700 kids in attendance. I really thought he was doing well and enjoyed his time at school. It wasn’t until we moved to a new area and he joined a new school in year 3, that I realised how different his schooling was, and how much happier and educationally successful he became.

Different Types of Schools

Life in our new surroundings was different than we had ever experienced, particularly for my young son.

Exam Week: The Stress of College

I’ve always thought of the three weeks after Thanksgiving as the most stressful time of the year, and not just because of the holidays. For students, this time is absolutely crazy: you get a couple of days off for Thanksgiving that you swear you will spend glued to your books. But you always wind up glued to the football game of the big turkey dinner instead. And what do you slam into right after the holiday? The end of the semester.

Final projects. Big essays. Exam week. For most students, this time is spent doing nothing but studying. Stress is at all time highs, and if you try to tell someone that they need to relax, you’ll invariably be informed that relaxing can happen during winter break.

Even a few minutes away from the books can help, though. A moment of relaxation can help a student go back to work refreshed and better able to cope with the immense pressure. Most schools offer several events during finals to give kids a bit of a break. During my school days, my favorite was called “Subs and Rubs.” The student government brought in sub sandwiches for a study break, along with several masseuses. All any student had to do was walk down to the student union for a lunch break and they could get a back rub before getting back to work.

There are a lot of benefits to these events, especially “Subs and Rubs,” even beyond a fantastic backrub. Students have to actually step away from their books for a little bit, which can actually improve their ability to study.

Learning How Not To Fight

Would you condem this person to hell?

One of the best things you can learn for real life situations is when and when not to fight.  In this case, “fight” means any kind of confrontation, such as an argument, protest or actual physical fighting.  Learning when not to fight is actually one of the weapons in your real life arsenal.  Many teachers of self-defense courses and martial arts classes teach when not to fight as one of their first lessons.
