I’m starting back to school this month, and I’ve been trying to prepare for the added stress. I spent a lot of college worried about the next big test or about splitting my time between classes and work. I don’t want to spend the next round of studying as a little ball of stress. I’ve been there, done that, and I don’t want to go back.
How am I planning to keep things under control?
For one thing, I’m not taking a full load of classes. I figure that I’ll have less stress if I’m able to focus on a smaller set of expectations at a time. I’m also planning ahead as much as possible. I don’t have the big test dates yet, but I’m setting aside time in my regular schedule to study and complete homework. I’m also trying to make sure that I have time to do something relaxing, whether that something is a massage, a walk in the park or just some general down time.
I don’t think I need to go as far as color-coded calendars to manage my stress — I think just making time should be enough to keep me from worrying. But I think I will need to make both my study time and my relaxation time absolutely mandatory. If I break my appointment with myself even once, I know it will be much harder to get back into that routine.
I’m also making sure that I’ve got some encouragement to keep on track. My boyfriend has agreed to engage in just a little bit of gentle nagging: if it looks like I’m planning to skip out on my planned studying or relaxation, he’s to remind me that I wanted both for myself.
