Novacaine Reactions

I had to suddenly get two teeth worked on this week. One tooth had fractured and now I’m wearing my first temporary crown. While in the chair, my dentist said, “Well, since you’re here and sedated, let’s get this other filling fixed, too.” I have dental phobia, but having to get a major work done during a week of hurricanes, Mom getting ill with diverticulosis and then the Internet wires going down, it did get to be a bit much. I all too eagerly opened my mouth for the Novacaine so at least one part of me would be numb.

I had a bad reaction to the Novacaine (also called Procain or Novacain). I’m mostly fine now, but I thought I’d let you know what it was like, so you know that you will get through it, too. I’m not a doctor, so please don’t use this article in the place of your doctor or dentist’s advice.

Take Deep Breaths

I was pretty good this time around at the dentist’s office. I was doing deep breathing and trying to relax my muscles when I felt them tense up. The dentist was chatty, which also helped to distract me from the procedure.

I did start to panic when I had to take an impression for my crown. You have this incredible amount of foam in your mouth which gives you a sensation of being choked.

Pounding Heart

Although I wasn’t as panicky, my heart was pounding as if I had just woken up from a nightmare. My limbs shook as if cold. What was going on here?

It was a bad reaction to the Novacaine. It goes away in a few hours, but can be really alarming. About two hours after the injection, I began to feel way too happy to have had my first dental crown. That also went away. I had a mild case.

If you don’t know your reaction to Novacaine, you should get someone else to drive you to and from the dentist. The dentist wanted me to stay in the waiting room for a bit to be sure I didn’t get worse. “Worse”, in this case, would be a rash, vomiting or seizures.

Bad reaction aside, I’m still insisting on having it before that dental drill starts up.
