Keeping New Year’s Resolutions

women-happy-outdoorI stopped making New Year’s Resolutions a couple of years ago. I try to improve myself all year so there’s no need for resolutions really. At least that’s what I tell people.

The start of a new year brings hope and the sense of renewal. I still get sucked into that sometimes and make a few resolutions that I dare not utter out loud.

The problem with New Year’s Resolutions is that I don’t take them as seriously as I do other goals. I think that’s because we’re conditioned to think that we won’t keep them. On the television I constantly hear jokes about people breaking there resolutions. It makes me feel like breaking them is okay. It really isn’t okay because a resolution is a promise you’ve made to yourself. If you can’t keep promises to yourself how will you keep the promises you’ve made to anyone else?

While I still won’t say what my resolutions are, I’m going to try extra hard to keep them this year.

Personally I think New Year’s is not a great time to make resolutions. We’re usually not in the best frame of mind to make realistic expectations of ourselves - we’re just recovering from the holidays, time off from work, etc. Setting yourself up for failure can be de-motivational. I agree that you should make resolutions throughout the whole year.

I totally agree with you, I have never been able to keep my New Year’s resolutions for more than 2 weeks… Maybe it’s just my personal weakness.
