When I was a kid, Mom once told us, "All I want for Mother’s Day is peace in this house."
So, that’s what we got her.
Turns out, that’s not really what she wanted. So, your first Mother’s Day shopping tip is that you DO have to get her something for Mother’s Day, even if she says not to bother. Unless you are in the hospital undergoing major surgery, she is lying. Be sure to get her a prezzie. (My apologies to English readers — your Mothering Sunday was in March. If you did forget, perhaps you can make up for it now.)
Don’t Remind Her of Her Usual Life
Unless your Mom adores cooking and cleaning, DON’T buy cooking or cleaning products for Mother’s Day. It makes you look like a slave-driver. Think about being a janitor. Suddenly, you are given a present. It winds up being a new mop. What a disappointment! You really would rather have something else that doesn’t remind you of your job, wouldn’t you?
Think: Treat Like A Queen
Your Mom puts up with you when everyone else has given up. Get her something to let her know that you think she is worthy of spoiling just like the Queen of England is spoiled whenever she goes visiting. Get her a handbag, new hat, perfume, aromatherapy products, massagers (even ones named Sven), flowers, creams, bath pillows, a new bathtub, a Corgi — wait, maybe not a Corgi. In other words, get her something she WANTS as opposed to something she NEEDS.
If Worse Comes To Worse
On Mother’s Day, get her a card and ask her what she would like. Then, take her to the shop to pick out the gift and buy it yourself. If you live very far away, a phone call still is preferred over an email. During the phone call, ask her if her Mother’s Day package arrived (even you haven’t sent one). When she says no, say, "Oh! It didn’t get there on time!" and then as soon as the Post Office opens on Monday, mail a package of luxury gifts.
Yes, she will know you are lying, but she really won’t care.
Hope this helps. Happy Mother’s Day.
