Frozen Peas: A very good cause

283749768_b190d7563eI’m a member of Twitter — a sort of microblogging site, for those of you who haven’t run across it. I didn’t get a chance to visit the site much this week, but when I logged in today, I was amazed to find something very special going on.

Susan Reynolds, a blogger, has breast cancer. She used a pack of frozen peas as an ice pack after a biopsy, and from there, a great many things have blossomed. The Frozen Pea Fund is one, and as a show of support for Susan and the fund, thousands of Twitterers have changed their icons to peas.

Susan’s simple story is incredibly inspirational — and comes at what must be a very scary time for her. But she, her friends, her friends’ friends and people even beyond that have found a further rallying cry for the struggle to make people aware of the prevalence of breast cancer: We will not appease cancer.

The cost of a bag of frozen peas at my local grocery store is practically nothing — about a dollar for a pound. Sometimes I drop a bag in my cart, sometimes I forego peas in favor of corn. But each time I wander down the frozen food aisle, from now on, I’m going to think about Susan, and all the other people willing to donate time and money to breast cancer research. 178,480 new cases  will be diagnosed just in 2007 and each one needs the help that better awareness will create.

    Hey,
This is David Neff over at the American Cancer Society. Thanks so much for posting about this. Susan is just one of the many women that face Breast Cancer every year. Thanks for helping us spread the word that this disease is treatable if caught.

P.S. If your coming to SXSW this year come hear us talk Frozen peas on our Interactive Panel.
