1555326043_3706699272For some people, stress is literally something they can’t afford. Stress is pretty expensive — a long list of health issues are associated with it, ranging from high blood pressure to ulcers. It becomes a vicious cycle when you consider how many people are worrying about their health care.

I’m part of that 41% of Americans without any sort of healthcare (even the crappy kinds), and yes, it worries me. I’m young, so I’m not too scared of a major illness, but accidents happen and any age group is susceptible to injury.

My mother has suggested that I get married just for health insurance, and she’s only mostly joking. I’ve considered plenty of options for insurance, and I’ve been told that if I only cut back a little on my spending, I should be able to afford it. I’ve done the math: I could afford health insurance if I chose not to eat.

So what do I do to minimize my risk of an impending personal health crisis? I keep my basic health up as much as I can. I take my vitamins, don’t walk around in wet clothes and generally listen to all those things my mother beat into my head when I was six. I also take what care I can afford. I get the occasional dental cleaning (the local dentists offer coupons!) and work with a massage therapist to manage some of the old injuries I acquired in my misspent youth.

I do worry about this whole health care thing. If I can’t manage insurance, what about all the people in tighter spots?

I’m so glad I live in the UK where we have the NHS. It’s not perfect but it’s better than nothing.

Great post, that is precisely the point in my post about the cost of a cancer patient. What if that person did not have insurance, how could they possibly afford those costs. Would they have to go without treatment or would they just be in debt for the rest of their lives? Why does it have to come to that. Why, in the richest country in the world we cannot take care of our citizens health. Why is it more important to allow companies to make a profit off the misery of people, than to make health care affordable and available to all.
Health Care should be a right not a privilege.
