Man sitting in rubleThere are long lists of medication meant to treat depression, and each one has its own long list of side effects. Some even warn against use for specific groups because they can actually increase depression for some users. Other concerns include drug dependency and overuse. This isn’t to say that these medications can’t be incredibly helpful for patients, allowing them to lead balanced lives.

Doctors do want to minimize the potential for side effects though, and some are turning to alternative methods to help patients control their depression. If a patient can minimize depression, his or her doctor can prescribe a lower dosage and protect the patient against many side effects.

One of the key methods of controlling depression is controlling the stress in a sufferer’s life. Basic lifestyle changes can be extremely effective, and can include working in less stressful situation, eating healthy and taking time out to relax. These techniques can be very helpful in handling depression, especially in light of new research that indicates that depression is caused by a combination of biological, genetic and environmental factors. The prime environmental factor is stress, which indicates that those individuals with a genetic predisposition to depression may still have a chance to limit its effects by limiting their own stress.

An added benefit is the minimized cost of care, comparatively. The rising cost of prescription drugs makes it hard for some people to obtain medication. In contrast, lifestyle changes come at a reduced cost. For instance, taking a daily walk is free, eating healthy isn’t very expensive and a massage is affordable, compared to dropping a few hundred dollars every month on medication.
