What You Need To Know About Caffeine

I have a love-hate relationship going on with caffeine. Unfortunately, this has resulted into my body becoming dependant on caffeine to the point where I get a caffeine withdrawal migraine if I don’t have any in 20 hours. Since I am not a morning person, I appreciate the lift that a strong cup of tea can give me.

Just like with anything else, the key to dealing with caffeine is to consume it in balance with the rest of your life. For example, after having a cup of tea, I usually have a glass of water. I get the initial kick from the caffeine and the longer source of energy from the water. Of course, I need the energy having to run to the bathroom.

Know Your Limits

Some people are far more tolerant of caffeine than others. Just a few milligrams can get some people sick. Symptoms include (but are not limited to) frayed nerves or jitteriness, muscle tremors, trouble talking, insomnia, loose stools and grinding your teeth when you do sleep. Please don’t use this blog post as a substitute for your doctor’s advice.

Be aware of how many milligrams of caffeine you eat or drink in a day. Caffeine is in chocolate, many over the counter painkillers like Excedrin (or Panadol Extra in the UK) as well as beverages. For a lot of people, 300 mg per 24 hours is okay with them. Again, you might be different.

Keep Away From Energy Drinks

A little bit of caffeine can help get you moving into your day’s work, but a lot of caffeine can give a high and then in a couple of hours you are exhausted again. I once knew a woman who sucked on diet cola all day and wondered why she was exhausted all of the time. Her body just couldn’t handle the ups and downs, so it just eventually just stayed down. She did so much better dropping the diet sodas from her life.

Energy drinks are loaded with caffeine, even close to 500 mg. They should be used for emergency situations only (such as having to keep awake in the hospital waiting room while your loved one is in labor). If you do drink them, please chase them down afterwards with a couple of glasses of water, as they can be as dehydrating as alcoholic beverages. Also, avoid drinking them when you are exercising to avoid dehydration and disorientation. And NEVER mix an energy drink with an alcoholic beverage, because your body will rapidly dehydrate.

When in doubt, drink water or herbal tea.

I remember one time when I drank 2 cans of a popular energy drink. After a bit my heart started beating very fast and I got so hyper I couldn’t stand still for more than 2 secs. Thank you for the valuable info.

Yes you are right that caffeine is not good for health. One should try to cut down caffeine from their daily life as quick as they can.

    Great article :)

I agree that energy drinks are not the answer to boost your energy. Start with what causes your lose of energy or instead of keeping your body a quick boost of energy from drinks, take a time off and rest so that your body will recharge on its own naturally. Eating healthy and living healthy can also give you more energy.

I avoid caffeine altogether. Just go for plain water / juice/milk etc. Soda is also not good.
