One common factor people over 100 have is that they dwell less on stress.
The world’s oldest person, 115 year old Edna Parker, is now constantly asked the secret to long life. One of the tips she gives is not to worry too much. This tip is backed up by the New England Centarian Study, which reports that one of the common factors people 100 and over have is that they don’t dwell on stressful events in their long lives. You still have to exercise regularly and eat a sensible diet (you get avoid that), but knowing that you can have a longer life by not stewing in your worries will hopefully encourage you to not stew in your worries.
And They Had Stressful Lives
As of this writing, there are only about 75 people that are in the 100+ club. They were from middle to lower class families and saw more than their share of stress and worries. They went through the Great Depression, two World Wars and the Geicko Gecko. (That thing freaks me out). Edna Parker, for example, grew up on a farm and led an active life. Her family reports that she’s "always been a thin person." The Parkers also are a long-lived family (living to over 80).
Not dwelling on stressful events doesn’t mean completely ignoring your problems. But centerians seem to deal with the problems as they come, get regular sleep and not fret over the past or worry about the future. They seem to take the time to smell the flowers (so to speak), but not every single flower along the way — only enough to give recharging breaks throughout the day.
The Puritan Work Ethic
Somehow along the line, Americans and Europeans have gotten the notion that not only do you have to be busy all of the time, worry was also considered a productive use of time. Even today, when modern man and woman do stress management techniques like power naps, yoga or meditation, others often criticize them for wasting their time. Now you can show these nay-sayers that you are wasting your time at all.
So, when you go to the spa, you are really investing in your life. That’s my excuse, anyway.
