Well I have been looking into cold therapy more since my toe incidence.
There are a lot of uses and benefits when used for the proper reasons and not overused.
Effects of Cold:
- Surprise! - It reduces pain
How it does that is not so obvious. A search of webmd provided a bunch of information about how to use cold therapy but not much about why it works.
The main effect is constriction of the blood vessels and forcing of fluids away from the area being treated reducing swelling. The pain reduction appears to be a result of blocking of the pain receptors or reduced ability of local nerves to transmit the pain signal.
The drawback are a reduced flexibility and mobility. If the cold is over applied, (more than about 20 mins) there may be a rebound effect - where the subsequent rush of circulation, blood and fluids returning to the area are greater than the original injury would have caused.
