On a recent morning, in those semi-conscious seconds of initial awareness, there was an unfamiliar stillness, a silence and peace that made me question where I was. I opened my eyes to see that I was where I am each morning, in my bed, in my house. Everything looked as it always does, nothing was out of place. As I stirred, it came to me that I was not in searing pain, for the first time in months. It was a surreal calmness in contrast to weeks upon weeks of beginning each day with discouraging discomfort caused by all my muscles stiffening as I sleep. While most of my body aches in the morning, my lower back cries in pain.
The source of difference in this particular morning was the treatment I receive from a health care provider. Three times a week I have ‘light touch’ chiropractic sessions. The practitioner, sympathizing with my continuous stiffness and pain, tried something new. And, it worked – if only for a day! Still, it is a gift of hope to think that I might be closer to finding a way to combat the pain I experience in the first moments of conscious thought each day.
Dealing with chronic illness is a battle of wit as much as anything else. It is a contest for the upper hand. Most days I take the advantage. But, this summer has been the biggest challenge so far. The morning pain has been persistent and intense, and keeping ahead of it has been a trial.
Since that peaceful morning, my figurative and literal step is lighter, my smile is broader, and I’ve regained the upper hand. Hope is a powerful force.

Hi April,
Thanks for taking a moment to write! I agree that we have to keep on hoping and looking for solutions when we face a challenge. I tell my children all the time that life can throw you curve balls and that when it does, patience, diligence, and hope will bring them to a better time. Thanks again for your comment, SS
There are some new recommendations for acute back pain from the American College of Physicians..interestingly enough, spnal manipulation is one of them. Read my article about back pain…it might help.
