A couple of a days ago I mentioned that we had a some major mishaps. With us two of of limping around the office, We had a not to be missed opportunity to try out a new product that had just came in. We put the ProtoCold cold pad to work on our sprained feet and smashed toes.
Now if you have ever tried cold therapy on a sprain or strain you know that good treatment options are hard to find.
- Ice is too drippy and too cold
Ice really need some kind of cover or insulation between the skin and the ice or the ice is too cold with the potential of cause skin damage. If applied too long it can also result in a rebound effect. This rebound effect is like it sounds, when the ice is removed your body will flood the area with blood and fluid and you we be worse off than you would have been without the ice. More swelling and bruising due to your skin being too cold for too long.
- Gel packs shift and crack
If you have ever had a gel pack crack you will think twice about using them again. The Gel packs also tend to shift with the gel (and the cold) moving to the lowest spot. If you use a strap to hold them in place they will bottom out, the gel moving away from the pressure applied by the strap and not delivering the needed cold to that part of your body.
So what about the ProtoCold pad. I am glad to report we are both better. The foot strain/sprain/bang was still a little sore at the end of the day but after 2 applications about 1 to 2 hours apart was much better and the limp barely notable. The toes did not fair as well. They are still badly bruised and the limp is pronounced. but on the bright side there was very little swelling left. The cold lasted a good 20 to 30 min at a pretty steady level. The pads were flexible and thin enough I could fit the 4 x 8 inch pad inside my tennis shoe comfortably. There was no noticeable moisture on the surface of the packs and We will be keeping a couple around in the freezer.
