If someone offers you this book, take it. It originally was distributed free to many prisons, so don’t be offended if someone offers it to you. I found mine in the “free books” bin at the local library. You don’t have to be a prisoner to find freedom in your thoughts with a little help from Deep & Simple: A Spiritual Path for Modern Times. Many of use can feel imprisoned due to debt, bad health or other hard to control circumstances.
Not A Contradictory Title
“Deep” is usually slang for “complex”, but it doesn’t have to be. Deep can also refer to simple, much in the same way a tree is rooted simply to the earth. Although attaining any kind of peace of mind seems impossibly complex at first, over time you really don’t think about the process very much. Although others see it as very complex, it really is quite simple.
Also, don’t feel put off by the word “spirituality” in the subtitle. Bo Lozoff’s book does not recommend any one religion or spirituality more than another. It’s sort of like a cook book where you can feel free to add or subtract ingredients as circumstances hit you. The main ingredient is meditation, which really isn’t a religion.
Favorite Food
The book’s longest lasting image, for me, was when the author’s son talked to a poor woman in Guatemala who basically lived on beans and tortillas day in and day out. She was asked if she ever tried other kinds of foods. Whenever she visited the city (rarely, she did try foods there). When asked what her favorite food was, she stunned her visitors by saying, “Beans and tortillas.”
We have what we need to have peace of mind and happiness. We just need to recognize it. Hope this helps.

Неплохо
So by the beans and tortillas metaphor, you’re saying that we have to take pleasure and comfort in the things we do every day. Our daily routines and processes, these are the things that should be our favorite things. Like the old saying goes, “Life is what is happening right now while you’re planning other things.”
I have also come across this book in my local library. Never thought of picking it up, but now I may (Ecouraged by your nice review.)
Bo Lozoff’s book seems so straight-forward. Most spiritual books turn me off in a few pages, but this one kept me reading and feeling inspired.
Il look out for this book, thanks.
I just heard a GREAT interview of Lozoff at iHanuman.com - very different, very loveable rascal who doesn’t play by the rules, but accomplishes a lot of good in the world.
I have already come across some great reviews about the book. Will pick it up next time i see it.
I read this book. It is really intellektual and interesting!
