Some days, it feels as if it’s not that much use trying to do anything. Your life seems completely in the hands of evil (or at least neutral) forces. This despair can definitely make you drown in stress. Maybe this little true story will help you come up for air.
In the Philadelphia area where I live, one of the great impersonal forces that seem to somehow control our lives is Comcast, the mighty cable company that has its headquarters in Philly’s largest building. Because of the tremendous amount of money Comcast provides to the city, it can basically do what it wants. Comcast can be a naughty company sometimes (just like any other large company). Comcast was taken to court by a teeny-tiny advocacy group Free Press which used a young, wet-behind the years lawyer – and Comcast lost .
That’s Ammori
Basically, Comcast is accused of blocking Internet access to “data hogs”, even if they always pay their Comcast bills on time. Bandwidth hogs are Internet users who download very large, slow moving files like BitTorrent files (no disrespect intended to BitTorrent). The point that Free Press and the little lawyer who could, Marvin Ammori, are trying to make is that Comcast does not own the Internet. The customers who pay Comcast own the Internet. They should be able to do whatever they want (providing it’s legal). They definitely shouldn’t get their service yanked just for downloading a big file.
What’s the Big Deal?
The big deal is that this is one victory for consumers’ rights and one time that fair play seems to take precedence over big money. Although there are some other Internet service providers in the state of Pennsylvania, that’s not the issue. The issue is a big company making the rules and treating customers like dirt and making them feel powerless.
When you pay for a service, you should get it. And hopefully with the help of little guys like Mike Ammori, you will. It’s nice to read some good news for a change, isn’t it? It makes taking a deep breath to relax that much easier.
And if you have a hunch that I wrote this post just to use the “tha’s Ammori” pun, you may be right.
