Sylvia Browne Is Relaxing Read

hamsterOne of the ways I like to relax after a hard day of pounding my head against the computer screen is to read.  I’ve already written about the ethereal poetry of Rumi, which I still highly recommend.  But I seem to have read so much Rumi in the past couple of years that my body is getting jaded.  The relaxation response is not kicking in like it used to.  But I have discovered that my body relaxes considerably when I read any book by the famous American psychic Sylvia Browne.  Do I believe everything she writes?  No — but that’s not the point.  I can make up my own mind about what to believe.  But in getting my body to relax, I need help from others.

My So-Called Past Life

Sylvia Browne talks a lot about our past lives being stored in our cell memory.  Causes of chronic pain or anxiety, she suggests, could stem from unresolved issues in a past life.  Since I was a little kid, I’ve always thought I was a hamster in a past life.  I don’t know why — it’s just something I’ve been sure of.  I think I spent a lot of time running on that little wheel.

Hamsters are a prey species.  They always have to be on the alert so they don’t get eaten.  Perhaps that is why I get so tense and trouble relaxing.  I still think I’m going to be eaten.  Getting dropped by Medicaid and getting my tax information together has only aggravated my anxiety.   Even if this is all hooey, at least I have someone to blame for my anxiety — my past hamster incarnation.

Getting In Touch With My Inner Hamster

So, how to get in touch with my inner hamster?  Although I still like stuffing my cheeks on occasion, I’m not too fond of seeds.  And I don’t have a wheel anymore.  I have tried meditation on communicating with the hamster prey-instinct in myself and telling me to let it go now.  I look at pictures of hamsters and hamster movies online in order to remember hamster life.  (I currently can’t own a hamster because my dog would eat it).  And I’ve had a really good laugh doing it, which has helped my body to relax when under stress, if even for a few minutes.

Granted, getting in touch with my inner hamster was probably not what Sylvia Browne intended when she wrote any of her books.  But somehow, thinking about hamsters is inevitable for my brain whenever I read her.  And that gets me to laugh.  Which gets me to relax.  This is the way my brain works.  Anyway, for helping to me to relax, Sylvia, I’m grateful.

Hope this helps.

Rena, what a delightful article! You are a wonderful writer. I’ve read some Sylvia, but my main man is Deepak Chopra. He is heavily into quantum mechanics, which is the only metaphysical thing that’s ever made sense to me.
I love your “inner hamster”. Toooo cute.

You two are too kind. Thanks for your kind words, both of you. My inner hamster says SQUEAK to your inner hamsters.
