The Need For Celebrity Gossip

819849_gossipGossip has been around forever.  As soon as three hydrogen molecules popped into existence, you can bet that two of them went off in a corner of the galaxy and started sniggering about the third.  "Did you see the way she wore those electrons?  Doesn’t she have a mirror?"  Things haven’t changed much since.

But why is there such a big demand for celebrity gossip?  There seems to be more media coverage on the Beckhams than there is on world leaders.  You know why?  Because both the media and the viewers need a break from the stream of depressing stories that usually make up the bulk of the news.  Quite frankly, we need a laugh.   And part of a celebrity’s job is to make us laugh.

 Everything In Moderation

Watching or reading the latest celebrity gossip can actually help you de-stress and relax by making you laugh and making you really glad that you are not that celebrity.  But you need to keep celebrity gossip in perspective.  You shouldn’t spend most of your money or time following it just for the comedy factor, no matter how outrageous Brittany Spears gets.  And remember not to take it seriously at all.  Most of the stories are based on hearsay and rumor and really stressed freelance journalists looking to make a deadline.

Everything in your life needs balance in order for you to stay happy, healthy and able to handle stress.  So you do need to keep up with serious current events just as much as seeing the who is cheating on who in Hollywood.  Just as you need to eat a balanced diet in food, you need to with the media as well.

The Village Idiot

The role of the village idiot was just as necessary in our anscector’s lives as their tradesmen and their healers.  This point was brought to light by Monty Python in a skit about village idiots, but there’s a lesson in those laughs.  The village idiots took on the role that celebrities take on today.  Our species needs someone to look at and laugh at and say, "Thank God I’m not that guy!"  In this role, I think Michael Jackson has taken on the role of village idiot for the entire world.

If you can learn how not to take celebrity gossip so seriously, then you can move on to lern not to take yourself so seriously.  This leads to a far less stressful life, trust me.  At least, this is what I say when I sit with Mom to watch Entertainment Tonight.

Hope this helps.
