The smell of fresh baked cookies is aromatherapy at its best. That scent tends to conjure up wonderful memories, and at least implies that you will taste a sweet treat soon. I know that I consider it one of the most relaxing smells in the world.
Baking a batch of chocolate chip cookies is my emergency relaxation technique. If I can’t get a massage, or take the time to decompress, I can always put together a quick bit of cookie dough.
Cookies work for me on so many levels: I get to remember the great times I’ve spent with my family. I get a few bites of comfort food. I get a few minutes of distraction spent cracking eggs and running a mixer. And then, when the smell is all gone, I get the pleasure of passing out a few cookies to give other people a quick pick-me-up.
There’s a shortcut to those amazing smells, too. If I’m out doing errands, or only have a few minutes over a lunch break, I can find a bakery. That special scent is always there waiting for me.
The only drawback to the cookie maneuver is that it’s a once in a while sort of thing. When I was in college, I would bake every day during some of the more stressful weeks. I only avoid packing on a few extra pounds by feeding everyone in my apartment complex.
Do you have a favorite cookie that you bake when you need to relax? Or maybe a different smell makes you just a little bit less stressed.
