With summer here, that means it’s time to break out the old library card or dig out those gift cards you received for Christmas and hit the books. Perhaps having to complete a summer reading list when as schoolchildren made Americans, Canadians and European children pre-programmed to read in the summer. But now, as (presumably) adults, we can read what we want. Being able to do any action that we really want to do is relaxing. Here are some of my choices for books to relax to this summer.
Anything by James Herriot
James Herriot (real name James Alfred Wight) became the most famous veterinarian in the world through his brilliantly written memoirs. His life and works was the basis for the hit BBC show All Creatures Great and Small. Even if you’re not too keen on animals, there’s something incredibly fascinating and insightful about Herriot’s works. He’s able to make some very subtle remarks about life and the human condition without socking you over the head with it. That’s why I think any of his books are great books to relax to.
Tea Bliss By Theresa Cheung
This is the book I wanted to write when I was in England. Part of my manuscript (that was burnt in a fire) was devoted to everything having to do with tea — tea quotes, healing with tea, tasseography and tea meditation. This book takes those ideas and interweaves tea drinking as a way of life. Even if you’re not into tea (and why not?) you will find a lot of practical self-help in this book to relax to.
Howard Hughes: The Untold Story
If anyone wrote the life of Howard Hughes as fiction, they could never sell it. One of the richest and one of the most insane members of the human species proves that money can’t buy happiness (although it can make paranoia a lot more comfortable). There have been many books about Hughes, but this is considered one of the best and the most thoroughly researched. With such a life, it needed two authors, Peter Harry Brown and Pat H. Broeske. Trashy and flashy, there’s no reason why you can’t be entertained while relaxing.
Hope these help.
