Boozing Your Way to Health

Red Apple Martini

For those whose main form of relaxation is kickin with a cocktail after work

The Introduction of the Healthy Cocktail

In the search for ways to keep strawberries fresh longer, researchers from Thailand and the US discovered that treating the berries with alcohol led to an increase in antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activity within the fruit. While such a boost helped the berries resist decay, the same compounds would also be expected to make the strawberries healthier to eat.

This fits with the recent trend at some high end bars towards organic cocktails blended for your healthy body …..      From the King Cole Bar on Madison Avenue we are offered:

The Big Green Apple - a nearly smoothie-like puree of freshly juiced Granny Smiths and ginger juice introduced to the inspiration of white tequila.

Could this be taking it a little to far???

            You tell me

From Jonathan Weinberg, who owns the bar at London’s Blakes Hotel, was so determined to address this trend that he’s put a ‘detox retox’ cocktail on the menu in South Kensington.

This consists of vodka, elderflower cordial and mint, along with specialized oxygenated water.

Jonathan says: "This will detox you from the night before and get you right back up there again.

"Not only are our juices organic, we mix our cocktails with oxygenated water called Ogo. We take normal mineral water and pump it up with extra-pure oxygen molecules to make it even more beneficial."

From none other than the April issue of Esquire we get the scientific breakdown on a healthy designer drink

We have codified it (the healthy cocktail) in a cocktail combining

  • Triple-distilled Irish whiskey (an excellent source of alcohol),
  • Blood-orange juice (full of antioxidant anthocyanins, cancer-fighting carotenoids, and other good things)
  • Lemon juice (get that vitamin C!),
  • Angostura bitters (homeopathic amounts of any number of medicinal roots, barks, and flowers),
  • Agave nectar as a sweetener (which has a very low glycemic load; available in health-food stores and some supermarkets) and topped off with a pour of resveratrol-bearing red wine. If one of these doesn’t fix you up, have another.

Based on a news release issued by Society Of Chemical Industry and various other sources
