Chewing gum regularly can help you diet, reduce stress and increase relaxation. A recent study focused on the use of gum to reduce cravings and control appetite, and demonstrated the benefits. Participants who regularly chewed gum before eating a snack reduced their calorie intake by between 25 and 36 calories.
Nutritionists report that this small decrease is enough to have a large scale effect if it is continued. Participants also reported improved moods. They were, overall, less stressed and more relaxed.
Despite the fact that the research was funded by the Wrigley Science Institute, (in turn funded by the same Wrigley that makes Doublemint, BigRed, Eclipse, Extra, Freedent and Juicyfruit Gums), there are corroborating reports from nutritionists who aren’t associated with the company. Dentists also point to some types of chewing gum to help improve oral health.
One claim of the Wrigley Science Institute seems harder to back up, though. They say that chewing gum can focus concentration and improve alertness. Personally, I can’t say that gum has kept me on track, but if you can tell me otherwise, I’d be glad to hear about it.
The Wrigley Science Institute is led by Dr. Gilbert A Leveille, a food scientist. Their website notes that they work with independent researchers, and the Institute has begun awarding yearly grants to investigate the impacts of chewing gum. Dr. Marion Hetherington, Professor of Biopsychology at the Glasgow Caledonian University has independently researched chewing gums effects on weight loss and has substantiated the Wrigley Science Institute’s work.
