"Be water, my friend." –Bruce Lee
There is something inherently magical about water. Many mythologies credit water or water Deities as the source of all creation. Perhaps it is the vital force of liquid motion that makes us think that all things can potentially happen if you give your wish to water and then leave an offering.
We are used to thinking that we have to work hard in order to make any of our wishes come true. This is true to an extent, but finding a wishing well or a special body of water to help you grant wishes needn’t be a painful quest. Don’t wait to find a special wishing well — make your own!
Types Of Wells
I really don’t recommend leaving a full bucket of water somewhere in your home and christening it as a well, because that water will get stagnant and become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. If you can use a special bowl full of water that is changed daily your wishing well, then go for it. You can either drink the water that contains your wish, give it to a plant to drink or pour it into a living body of water to take your wish to Nature.
When I was homeless, I made a big three wick candle my wishing well. Hot candle wax flows like water. I did have a fresh water spring a mile away, but there were times I felt too desperate and could not make the walk. The very act of giving a wish to a well or to my makeshift candle wishing well made me feel better. This won’t work for everybody, but it sure makes you feel more in control of your own life.
I made a wish to the candle and then offered some of my food or tea to the great old horse chestnut tree outside my makeshift dwelling in the woods. Then, I’d stop obsessing about the wish and try to get on with my life. The old saying, "Let go and let God" might help you understand more of what I’m talking about. This type of wishing well works no matter what your spiritual point of view is — just adjust it to your own viewpoint.
You Are The Wishing Well
Even though I love wishing wells, I highly doubt that the well itself helps grant your wish. The ritual of making a wish to a well and then giving an offering serves as a focal point for your energies and reaffirms your decisions. This can help you get on with your life and steadily work at fufilling your wish yourself. Doing rituals that have personal meaning and comfort for you can help your relax considerably. Considering that our bodies are mostly made up of water, we are walking wishing wells.
