Stess Relief You Can Do Right Now

cat stretchAhh, and you thought you could come to this blog in order to slack off, eh?  Well, you still can, but you can also do these exercises to help you relax at your desk, couch, airport or wherever you are while you read this.  If you are in a situation where it isn’t safe to stretch (like a crowded subway), then mentally pretend you are doing them.  That will give you an exercise in creative visualization.  Then, you can do them in real life later.  Don’t be scared.  They’re really easy.

There’s no right or wrong way to do these instant stress relief exercises.  You won’t be tested on them.  That’s one of things that make them so effective!

Head Tilt

Just tilt your head from side to side, a little at first, then further until you feel a pleasant stretch.  If at any time it hurts, stop.  You can also tilt your head forward and back.  Some people like to place their hands on the opposite sides of their heads to help with the tilting.  Just do what you are comfortable with, and it can help be instant stress relief, of tension relief, anyway,

Shoulder Rotation

That’s the fanciest name I could come up with — don’t let it startle you.  Your shoulders don’t have to completely move in circles.  Just do what you can. Stiff shoulders can often lead to tension headaches.  It’s good to take and release a deep breath before you move your shoulders. Often, my shoulders are too stiff to move them completely in a circle.  So, I shrug them forewords and back as far as it is comfortable.  Take a deep breath afterwards to contribute to instant stress relief.

Straighten Up

I have terrible posture — or so I keep getting told.  When I write, I hunch over without realizing it.  Perhaps you do, too.  Take a moment to straighten your spine.  And if it’s already straight, you have my envy!  There — somebody is jealous of you — that’s gotta be instant stress relief.  Also, take a deep breath while your back is straight.  This helps the body to relax and to get more oxygen to needed areas in the body.

Foot Bounce

I’m sure there is some technical name for this stress relief exercise, but I prefer to call it "Foot Bounce".  While you’re sitting, merely bounce your feet up and down or jiggle your knees to get the blood flowing.  You move as much as you are comfortable with.  Getting some blood flowing in your lower limbs after you have been sitting a while is surprisingly relaxing, even for just a few minutes.

Smile

I know you don’t believe me, but smiling can help relax tension in your head or facial muscles.  It’s the best instant legal stress relief that anyone knows of.
