In researching many kinds of alternative healing and meditation, I read again and again about the importance of breathing properly. Then, I usually read about a whole bunch of breathing exercises you can do. And then I try them. And then, my face usually turns beet red and I wind up breathing like a I usually do and then go read a book on a different subject. This happens to other members of my family whenever they try these exercises.
What’s Wrong With Me?
Breathing exercises have been performed by people from many countries. And yet, my family can’t manage it. It seems to be the counting part of the exerises, e.g. “inhale for a count of seven, hold for a count of seven and then exhale for a count of seven.” Nobody in our family ever got higher than a C+ in Math. Even after all those years watching Sesame Street - it’s just too much pressure.
Although I can walk and chew gum at the same time, I don’t seem to be able to breathe and count at the same time.
What To Do
I still do some breathing exercises, but I don’t count. This way, there’s no pressure. I just let my body dictate the pace. I still recommend breathing deeply as a quick way to try and relax. I read self-help and alternative healing books like a read a cook book. They are merely suggestions, but you can still tinker around with the recipe.
