Dealing With a TMI Moment

819849_gossipI learned today that TMI is text-speak for Too Much Information.  When I was a kid, TMI was short for Three Mile Island, but times change.  Perhaps that little slip qualifies for a TMI moment, in the current meaning of the term.  You will know when you are going through a TMI moment.  This is when you see, hear or read something that makes you involuntarily wince and your stomach clench.

In a recent column in The Philadelphia Inquirer, author Lisa Scottoline described her TMI moment when she suddenly discovered that the cute country music advert she was enjoying was actually a Viagra ad.  She dealt with it in the way she knew best — she wrote about it in a really clever way.

Having Stress In the Information Age

Apparently, we live in the Information Age.  At times, there seems to be more information than anything else on the planet.  Do you think people who lived during the Bronze Age went through Too Much Bronze moments the way we have a TMI moment? ("Ooo, I really didn’t need to know about Gunther’s smelting habits.") Although the information given to you (whether you want it or not) was probably meant to help you, it tends to have the opposite effect.  We just need to learn how to laugh at these TMI moments to dissolve the stress the provoke.

For example, last month a study done by Harvard Medical School shows how stress during pregnancy can help give the baby allergies.  Well, thank you for making sure the next generation will be sneezing their heads off, Harvard Medical School.  Being pregnant is stressful enough — but you HAVE TO RELAX!  NOW!!!  Your baby’s future health and happiness depends on it!!!

Gee, why aren’t you relaxed yet, Mom?  Could it be because you are having a TMI moment?

BEING RELAXED IS GOOD FOR YOU!

I sincerely hope I am not the bearer of TMI moments for you with my blog posts.  I do try to be low-key and humorous as well as giving relaxation and wellness advice.  But if a TMI moment should slip through, just laugh it off.  It doesn’t matter if you believe in what I advise or not — it only matters that you are more relaxed after you read it than before you read it.  If that means you wind up laughing at me, so be it.

But if you do relax by laughing at me, I don’t want to know it.

Good point — sometimes you have to laugh through clenched teeth, but it helps to at least make the attempt.
