Eating to Relax

Many people indulge in comfort foods and sweets when they are stressed out and feel as if they have no control. Ultimately this makes them feel worse for several reasons. The biggest one is guilt for overeating and also the subconscious knowledge that by indulging or bingeing they have yet again surrendered control. When we overeat or eat emotionally we tend to feel bloated and uncomfortable. This is not a relaxed state. Stop and savor each bite, whether your’re eating rich comfort food or a healthy, well-balanced meal. Allow yourself to revel in the food you’re eating and don’t beat yourself up over a slip. Stop before you’re full. Your brain and stomach are not always in synch, so allow them time to catch up or your stomach will feel uncomfortable. Realistically this must be a practice in our hectic lives; it’s not a habit we can transform overnight. Be present at meals, and with the pleasure of each bite realize the nourishment we give to our bodies every day. It can lead to a healthier relationship with food, and a time to relax and enjoy life away from the pressures of the world.
