raquel's bday 035I come from a musical family. My father and husband are musicians. My grandfather was a musician. I dabble in music but am not very good. Music has been a very important part of my life ever since I can remember.  When I was small my mother took me to all of my father’s gigs. When I woke up in the morning often times the first thing I heard was him playing the piano. Sometimes when I woke up in the middle of the night I’d hear him playing the piano downstairs. The sound was comforting. It assured me that everything was alright.

Calm, soothing music helps facilitate relaxation. Just look at this picture. My father looks like he’s fallen asleep while playing the keyboard. How much more relaxed can you get?

Studies have shown that after listening to calming music people are generally more relaxed. Listening to music after surgery decreases patients pain levels.

The music blocks out stressful outside noises.  The body will try to mimic the rhythm of the music. Slow music can help decrease heart rate and slow breathing. A peaceful melody gives the mind something calming to focus on, putting you in a meditative state.

I love to listen to music. It really helps me relax.
