I talked to my youngest sister the other night — much younger, actually; she won’t turn thirteen for another six months. Despite not even being in high school yet, her schedule is absolutely packed. In addition to school, she runs track, plays piano and walks neighborhood dogs. She’d called me because she had only a few days left to finish a research paper for her science fair project and she was having trouble finding resources.
“But isn’t it almost Winter Break?”
“Yeah, but that just means all the teachers are trying to get through a bunch of stuff before the holidays!”
Apparently, not only is this time of year becoming notorious for overbooking oneself for social events, but for trying to cram in every last bit of work before the calendar turns to the next year.
Is there anyway to avoid this overbooking? Especially for 12 year old girls who should be out playing in the snow, rather than studying right up until the holidays?
Just saying no doesn’t seem to help so much. After all, an employer or a teacher is still going to expect your assigned work whether or not you want to do it. But it might be worth it to minimize some of the stuff that you’ll have more time to deal with during January. For instance, I’ve begged off of volunteer work for this time of the year. Plenty of other people feel the need to volunteer around Christmas. I’ll wait until January or February, when volunteers are still needed but are less available.
How can you slow down your holiday season?
