They may be able to explain away mild problems, like tension in the shoulders, and address them with stopgap measures, like a good massage, but they don’t know where to start dealing with the underlying stress.

Psychiatrists suggest creating your own stress inventory as way to discover the factors in your life that are causing you stress. Basically, all you have to do is list out anything you can think of that is causing you worry, fear, anger, or tension. You might not be able to list out everything in your life in one sitting, so it is worthwhile to carry around your inventory for a few days, so that you can add items as you encounter them.

You’ll be surprised at how much can make it on to your list, although you should work to be specific. If, for instance, you are a parent, your children may get you angry. The children themselves aren’t the cause of the anger, though. The specific action that they took is the cause of your stress.

Once you have an inventory that you feel is complete, don’t make fixing these issues your primary focus. That sounds very counter-intuitive, but the simple act of writing down problems can help your subconscious focus on solutions, without forcing the rest of your attention to go over and over your problems — which can make them seem bigger than they are.
