Do Goldfish Meditate?

fishYou can learn lots of lessons from any animal.  You can learn how to do mantras from observing your cat, for example.  And even a goldfish has advice just as golden.

Although I don’t have proof, I firmly believe that goldfish meditate.  At least, mine do.  They are continually in wonder about every single moment of their lives.  Moving a rock a quarter of an inch provokes a flurry of inspection.  They are just as fascinated about their tank as they were one minute ago.  They assume nothing.  Every moment is filled with infinite possibility.  This is the essence of meditation (as far as I’m concerned).  Although many times those learning meditation are urged to be like water, you could also be like a goldfish.

Fishy Gurus

I do admit that I can’t read my goldfish’s minds.  If i did, I’d probably be so overwhelmed by their wisdom that my tiny little mind would explode.  I do think that they are happy.  This is because they are healthy and growing.  They are practically glowing in the dark, they are so healthy.  When goldfish get stressed, they get sick.  So, if they’re not happy, my goldfish must be incredibly mellow.  Either way sounds good to me.

So, how can you follow in the watery path of your finned gurus?  Through the power of your mind.

Goldfish Meditation

I think it’s best to do this when you can actually look at a swimming goldfish.  Perhaps you can only do this by looking at various web cams showing live streaming images of swimming goldfish.  Or perhaps you want to watch a video or DVD of a goldfish.  In fact, you don’t necessarily have to just stick with goldfish, but they are the only fish I have and I’m admittedly prejudiced in favor of them, so there.

Anyway, you just sit in a comfortable position, but don’t lie down.  You might fall asleep if you lay down.  Sit up and stare into the fish tank.  Breathe deeply and just loose yourself into watching the fish.  Don’t expect to get a lot of incredible revelations about life, the universe and anything.  Besides, any profound thoughts that suddenly pop into your head tend to get in the way of your meditating.  Just notice the thought ("My, that’s a nice thought") and move on.

Then pretend you are a goldfish.  Just empty part of your mind of all assumptions and watch the world float by.  There is no right or wrong way of doing this.  Your mind will do it to a level where you become comfortable with it.  Sometimes, you don’t want to go this far, but just want to watch the fish as if they’re living lava lamps.

Either way, you’re mellow.  Wow, man.
