One of the ways I relax is to watch my goldfish at night.  I can’t watch them during the day, like when I eat lunch, because they frantically beg at me.  That can get a little annoying — especially when I look away from them only to see that my dog is also begging at me, large liquid puppy eyes fastened onto my sandwich.  But at night, my goldfish are quite the gurus of tranquility.  Here are some lessons that I recently learned.

Keep Your Mouth Shut … It’s Fun

I have one goldfish who hasn’t opened his mouth in over a month.  He must be opening his mouth sometime in order to eat.  He just does this whenever I’m not around.  He does this on purpose. 

I stare and stare until my eyeballs get dry and that fish’s mouth just does not open.  I swear I’m not making this up.

But, why would this goldfish want to see me biting my lower lip, knitting my brows and muttering to myself?  I think it amuses him.  He, a mere one inch long critter, has the power to freak out a nearly six foot tall giant.  Heaven knows what else is there for a goldfish to do.  Either that, or he’s taken a fishy vow of silence.

One Tank Is Enough

Goldfish are content to live in aquariums, in that they stay healthy, full-finned and keep swimming in the right direction.  And they don’t have much in the way of possessions.  Some gravel, a patch of algae, an airstone — it’s all just right for their fishy lives.

We have houses full of stuff and we’re usually miserable, mostly in thinking that we need more stuff.  And then we work ourselves crazy in order to pay for this stuff.  Just like the fish, you need the right balance of stuff to keep you from getting sick.
