Sudden Shock Puts Things Into Perspective

My dog, Pony

My dog, Pony

Shock the Mommy to life.

When talking to my dog, Pony, I refer to myself as “Mommy” (or “Mummy”). I don’t believe I’m my dog’s mother, but that’s not the point. The point is, my dog thinks I’m her mother. This is what I tell people. But deep down inside, Pony is my family as well as my best friend ever.

So, when anything bad happens to her, it’s as if the sky has come crashing down on my head. Such an event happened Thursday.

Rollin’ And Tumblin’

During a walk, when Pony spots a patch of lawn she particularly likes, she’ll suddenly do a front somersault or a shoulder roll onto her back, wriggle her back into the grass and kick her back legs into the air. Usually, this is a happy event in her life.

And then on Thursday morning, she began such a roll and screamed.

I jumped. She held up her left paw and liked it, panting frantically and cringing. She tried to walk a step and collapsed into the grass, licking her paw.

I bent down but couldn’t see any blood or fell any breaks. We were several blocks from home. Now what? Would I have to carry her? She’s over sixty pounds. I can’t drive. That means begging a ride off of a relative or neighbor to go to the vet (Mom is away on vacation).

While I was panicking, Pony began hobbling towards home.

False Alarm

I was quaking in panic when I got home, but trying to look calm and in control so Pony wouldn’t panic. Didn’t help.

However, she had not broken anything. As it turns out, she didn’t even need to go to the vet (he talked to me over the phone). She had a bee sting. Less than five hours later, she was perfectly fine.

What Did I Learn

I had been stewing that morning over some small problems which I now can’t remember. Seeing Pony with her paw raised helplessly quickly sorted my priorities in order and help me appreciate the things I had and that my life was currently pretty good. Although I don’t recommend purposefully giving yourself a scare in order to get your priorities in order, it sure can help you see the big picture and not dwell so much on a minor issue that is blinding you.
