Spiritual Spa

lighting up the dark moments

Give your self a little love

“How are you?”, asked the familiar voice on the phone. This was the interested question of a friend who has heard it all from me. When she asks, she really wants to know and her steadfast demonstration of unconditional love over the past 12 years allows me to spill it ALL…my dark moments and shameful little - and giant - foibles, lurking fears, and secret hopes. She hugs it all and just keeps asking for more. Ah, the gift of a good friend.

I thought for a moment …

and answered with surprise, “I’m really good….things are really good.” My unfamiliar answer compelled a long pause from the phone before I heard, “wow… that’s great!” It felt so good to acknowledge this little era of bliss in my life and it reminded me of the importance of proclaiming, cherishing, and celebrating the things are going well in our lives. even if they seem minor or visit us for just a few hours.

Most of us have a ready list of all the stuff we aren’t jazzed about, all the thoughts that keeps us up at night, the habits we can’t seem to break, all the projects we’re dreading, and those tiring people that we’re struggling with. We can give ourselves a spiritual mini-spa by creating space to really notice when and what is going well or feeling good in our lives.

Celebrate what’s working a little by:

  • taking a few slow, deep breaths
  • walking under tall trees
  • listening to a favorite song
  • nibbling a treat
  • calling a friend
  • playing with clay
  • looking unhurried at the stars
  • picking up a tantalizing stone to mark the moment
  • watching the sunset
  • reading on the beach
  • bringing home some flowers

Savor the good times in a way that resonates for you.

It’s all too easy to get bogged down with what is going wrong or what we’re not good at. Nibbling a treat sounds good to me :)
