Come home from work, kick off the shoes and melt into the couch. It’s many Americans’ formula for relaxing in the evenings. Every day, though, a few more negative reports make that formula seem suspect.
Consider the latest research out of the University of Auckland: a seven year long study showed that not only is it likely that watching too much television increases the risk of obesity, but that if a parent watches too much television, their children are more likely to be obese as well, no matter their television consumption habits.
Obesity isn’t exactly relaxing, and neither are some of the other issues that have been connected to too much TV, like insomnia and trouble with concentration.
It seems fair to say that reducing the television habit is beneficial, but we shouldn’t cross it off entirely. Watching television is enjoyable, and sitting down for a little while can help with relaxation. Television can help us relax; we just want to make sure that we watch a moderate amount. Like all good things, too much is harmful, but just enough is pleasant.
The type of television people watch to relax seems to vary widely. I know a few guys who turn on old horror flicks when they want to just kick back, though I’ve never found zombies a good way to relax. Some people prefer sitcoms and still others watch the news or an educational show.
Think about your television watching habit. Do you think it’s relaxing? How much TV does it take to give you a chance to relax? And what sort of shows do you watch to relax?

I agree with April. I watch TV shows that make me laugh. I also choose DVD’s that are comedic. Once in a while I like a good thriller.
Laughter is a great stress reliever. It releases endorphins. I never get tired of Seinfeld reruns.
