If meditation or herbal tea isn’t your cup of tea to help you relax and calm down when you’re tightly wound, then perhaps self-hypnosis is for you. You can go to a hypnotherapist, but many people prefer self-hypnosis because it’s flexible, cheap and you are assured of privacy. There is no one right way for everybody when it comes to relaxation.
What You Need
There are many instructional tapes and CDs on the market, or you can do self-hypnosis for relaxation and calm yourself. You need at least ten minutes of uninterrupted time. You can have your room quiet or with soft music. You can burn incense or not. You can lie down or sit up. You may choose to go right to sleep after the hypnosis session, but you have to be awake throughout the whole session.
The Hypnotic Trance
Get relaxed. Get deeply relaxed. You might count from twenty down to one to get relaxed, or chant a familiar poem or prayer. This is to get you into a hypnotic trance. However, you will still be fully aware of what’s going on. You do feel very peaceful but shouldn’t feel too dopey.
You want to plant helpful suggestions into your subconscious, so they pop up whenever your heart pounds or you realize that you need more relaxation and calm. You state your own helpful positive suggestion, such as “I can calm down when I need to” or “I can control stressful thoughts”, then slowly wake yourself back up and go about your day.
Some people suggest you sit up when doing this so you don’t fall asleep. Personally, I don’t think taking a nap is such a bad thing. Hey, it might even help get the suggestion into your subconscious.
Play around with it to see what works for you. The big advantage of using self-hypnosis for relaxation and calm is that there aren’t any negative side effects.

I have been presenting stress management to corporations for many years and have always been encouraged by the way people of all ages respond to a relaxation session. One of the things I stress before the session begins is that participants do not try to relax. If they let go then the body with do the relaxing. Many people are amazed and how quickly the time passes and that they get into the spirit of the process once they set aside and striving or effort.
I have recently produced an Free MP3 version of the Get Tough With Stress Relaxation session and feel details of how it may be obtained are available at: http://www.stresstips.com/?page_id=185
