Dealing With Insomnia

When we don’t get enough sleep, we’re cranky, tense and unhealthy. We can’t concentrate, learn new things or make decisions. In order to maintain overall good physical and emotional health, you need at least seven hours sleep a night (or day, if you are a night shift worker). Here are some tips to help you deal with insomnia. As always, please don’t use this blog post as a substitution for your doctor’s advice.

Sleep Alone

You will sleep a lot better when you are by yourself (whenever possible). Sure, you can still do other things I the bedroom, but when it’s time to get some shut-eye, it’s best to have only one body in the room. It’s amazing how much noise someone else makes when they sleep — and, of course, they always fall asleep before you do.

This rule doesn’t apply to pets, depending on your pet and your relationship with your pet. Some people sleep a lot better when they know their pet is nearby. I can’t sleep without my dog in the same room with me.

Start a Going To Bed Routine

We are creatures of habit — although it can take at least two weeks for a new habit to form. You need to start training your subconscious to relax and unwind with some sort of ritual. This could be changing into your pajamas a couple of hours before bed and not eating a large amount of food. You also want to cut caffeine two hours before bedtime. Many people like to turn the TV off right before bed or only watch shows that are a bit silly and not stressful. Also, exercise is not recommended right before bed.

Go See Your Doctor

It’s not normal to have insomnia. This could be a sign that you have a medical condition, such as sleep apnea, that needs attention. Never self-medicate with alcohol, drugs or over the counter medications. A doctor can help determine if you are a good candidate for medication in the first place. You can also blame your doctor if anything goes wrong (just a joke, folks!)

Good Information. I find that the answer to good sleep is to be consistent. Do the same thing every night before you go to sleep.

This is true. However, if i may add, adding to our habits would be to consider what we that is what kind of foodstuffs we take in and how much because this also contributes to how our body copes up. Also what kind of exercise we do contributes a lot and also when we do it and for how long and how intense the workout is. It basically all corresponds to our lifestyle and we might wanna consider this point. But for the time being, it would be good if try to apply those simple tips and see how it works. And yeah, try not to have a heavy meal before bedtime. Heavy meals do make a person sleepy but the stomach will have to digest all the food all throughout the night and will thus spend so much energy which causes one to feel tired in the mornings. This can greatly affect our body clock and make sleeping difficult.
