Color Therapy For Stress Management

colorsWhere lipstick is concerned, the important thing is not color, but to accept God’s final word on where your lips end.  — Jerry Seinfeld

Color therapy (sometimes called color magic) is one of the easiest to use and least expensive alternative forms of healing.  It has been used for donkey’s years for a variety of ailments, most notably in stress management.  It works on the basis that your mind is more powerful than your body’s symptoms.  If you can’t believe that for whatever reason, don’t worry about it. Color therapy for stress management is not for everyone.  Please use color therapy for stress management in conjunction with other therapies, not just by itself.  And, as always, please don’t use this article in the place of a qualified doctor’s advice.

 Know Thyself

Each color sets off associations in our subconscious. There are some theories that different colors stimulate the release of different hormones in the body.  For whatever reason, colors (like odors) seem to strongly stimulate physical responses in our bodies because they trigger certain ingrained associations in our subconscious.  However, the colors that calm one person down may not work for the next person.

You need to know what colors make you calm and what colors make your eyeballs ache.  With me, for example, very dark colors like indigo or black are soothing to me.  However, there are many people who are disturbed by these very dark colors.  I also find that pastel pink is a very soothing color, but again, this might not be the best color choice for stress management for everyone.

Methods Of Use

There are many, many different ways to fit color therapy for stress management into your everyday life.   You can put on certain colored sunglasses that make the entire world look a certain color (perhaps this is where we get the expression "looking at the world through rose-colored glasses"?) You can get bottles of different colors, fill them with water and drink it.  You could choose your day’s clothes because they contain colors soothing to your eyes.  You could put sheer cloth over your sunlit windows.  You could handle certain colored crystals (like rose quartz) to help you calm down.

There are no hard and fast rules to using color therapy for stress management, which is why many people find it helpful.  It also can help you feel more in control in your life.  But again, if it doesn’t sound it’s for you, don’t worry about it.

Hope this helps.
