"Whenever I make a bum decision, I just go out and make another." –Harry Truman
Having to make a decision is stressful. What if you make the wrong decision? Will you be able to cope? Making decisions are far more stressful for some people than others. Some people have a very difficult time even making "small" decisions as what to have for dinner or what book to buy. If you find problems with making decisions like these, you are definately going to have trouble with making decisions about your career, your health and your love life. No matter how stressed out you get when faced with choices, here are some tips for less stressful decision making.
No Decisions Are Wrong Decisions
Decisions are just decisions and do not contain any inherent "goodness" or "badness". It is only our own perceptions that color a decision as right or wrong. You can’t change past events, but you can change your perceptions and your attitudes towards them. All decisions will seem right at the time the decision is made (or they should, anyway.)
For example, when I was 29, I ran away from America to England. At the time, it seemed like the right decision. It very quickly turned into a very painful decision with a ripple effect on the rest of my life. However, looking back on this decision now, I can see that there was a lot of good things that happened to me in England, as well as bad. So, was my decision to run away to England wrong? Depends on what day you ask me.
Put The Blame On Something Else
If the previous tip seems a bit "fluffy bunny" for you, then you can try this tip for less stressful decision making. Have something else make the decision! Flip a coin, roll a pair of dice, read your tea leaves, ANYTHING but have it make the decision if you are stuck. It serves two purposes: it not only gets the decision done and over with, but also gets you somewhat off of the hook. You didn’t make a bad decision — the coin did. And once a decision is made, you often feel a sense of relief.
Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming is when, in the middle of a dream, you suddenly realize that you are dreaming. You are then free to do whatever you want (within the laws of that particular dream). The great thing about lucid dreaming is that there are very little consequences from any decision you make. And, even if you make a "bad" decision in your dream, you wind up seeing that it’s not so bad, after all. The dream, and life, goes on. Over time, making decisions during lucid dreaming can help make decisions in the waking world less stressful.
Hope this helps.
